Midway Between You and Me

By: Rogenna Brewer
Interesting story but difficult to follow. Story flips from Vietnam 1970's to 2002 too often. (Fiction) 08/24/09

Island in a Storm

By: Abby Sallenger
A 19th Century historical fictional account that mixes coastal ecology and weather change with the story of haves and havenots on an exclusive barrier island. Isle Derniere/Last Island - a haven from yellow fever, anti slavery sentiment and the havenots - a beautiful getaway spot. The story of Isle Derniere makes it clear that have of havenot, we are all cast upon a allegorical island together. Island in a Storm is a cautionary tale about our relationship with our world which from the beginning takes an advisory approach to recounting a historical episode that harks forward to Hurricane Katrine and global warming. A Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity

By:Bill O'Reilly
Marist graduate Bill O'Reilly outlines his childhood and early adulthood in this most recent offering A Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity. This reader particularly liked the historical references made in the book. It helped bring the reader back to what seemed to be a simpler time. For him and this neighborhood friends, however, change and all that went with it was just on the horizon. He credits his strict catholic upbringing with saving him from the scourges that led his troublemaker friend, Clem, to an early grave. The book is worth a read for his description of his high school summer adventures in house painting. (Non-fiction) 08/21/09

The Stoning of Soraya M.

By: Freidoune Sahebjam; translated from the French by Richard Seaver
This is a true account of the story of Soraya, a 35 yr. old woman who, in 1986, was put to death by stoning. Sahebjam was on assignment as an Iranian journalist (raised in France)in a small village in Iran when he met Zahra, Soraya's aunt, and she recounted the terrible circumstances surrounding the death of this innocent young woman. The story follows Soraya's upbringing and marriage, at age 13 yrs., to her husband and the subsequent abuse and neglect she and her children suffered at the hands of her husband who was involved with dirty dealings, visiting prostitutes, etc. She bore 9 children in 14 years, with her husband and when her husband fell in love with another woman (child, actually, of 14 yrs.) he claimed that Soraya was unfaithful to him and should be put to death (he could not afford to support two wives...). This book shows the awful truth about many of the acts that were (are?) still being committed in the small villages at that time. Soraya was one woman but many stoniness had taken place all over the country--approx. 1000 in the past 15 years. The tribunal to determine Soraya's fate included family members as well--her two eldest sons. Her own father helped in the stoning. Soraya's husband had a lot of help in convincing the authorities of the lie of the crime that Soraya supposedly committed. By telling this story Sahebjam has helped to tell the story of this innocent woman and brought attention to a much needed topic. It was a short, well written and disturbing book. The movie has already been made but I am not certain as to a release date. Review by Bonnie. (Non-fiction) 08/21/09

The Last Child

By: John Hart
WOW! This book kept you going from beginning to end. It was about a boy 13 years old whose twin sister was abducted 1 year ago. He tries to find her every way he can. He was told someone took her in their car so he is looking for known child molesters. It tells about his home life and then the involvement of Detective Hunt who also is totally involved with the case. The many characters bring real excitement to the book. Then there is Levi, a giant of a man that reminds me of John in The Green Mile. The ending is a little like Stephen King. Goosebumps but really good!!! I loved it. Review by Carol.
