The Help

By: Kathryn Stockett
This book is set in Jackson, Mississippi in the early 1960's at the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement. It is the story of how 22-year-old Skeeter Phelan, a would-be writer, convinces two black maids, Aibileen and Minny, to help her write about what it is like to work in white households. These three woman alternate telling the story. Although it is very dangerous, other maids eventually contribute their stories and the book is published. I was hooked by this book from the first paragraph to the last page. I loved these brave women who risked so much to tell their stories. I can't wait to discuss it. A great choice for book discussion groups! Review by Virginia. (Fiction) 08/20/09
