Unfortunate English

By: Bill Brohaugh
UNFORTUNATE ENGLISH is a book that details the "gloomy" etymological truth behind common English words. At first glance, the subject matter can seem pretty dark (since several English words, including slogan and tuesday, were words that originated in battle. However, Brohaugh presents these misconceptions in a comedic and light-hearted way, as if he really is trying to educate and enlighten people, rather than simply point out most people's ignorance. It's interesting to note how time completely alters a word's usage, but it's absolutely mind-boggling to think that some seemingly harmless words have some perverse and deviant origins. If you enjoy inside jokes and impromptu insults, this book is a gold-mine. If you just love the English language, than this book is an educative hoot. Review by Sarah. (Non-Fiction) 08/16/09
