Set in North Dakota in the time period between the World Wars, this novel is about a war weary German soldier who comes to the United States to open a butcher shop in Argus, North Dakota. There the butcher and his wife began to raise their family and to make the acquaintance of Delphine Watzka. The butcher, his wife and Delphine develop a friendship that drives the story forward. Although I have known about Louise Erdrich for a long time, this is the first time I have read any of her books. I think it would be a great choice for a book group. Review by Virginia.
