By: Barbara Kingsolver
Some friends read this book, and I decided to give it a shot. I really enjoyed it. In this non-fiction book, Barbara Kingsolver and her daughters and husband set up a family challenge. The goal is to eat locally for a whole year! WOW! Many of us take for granted the HUGE abundance of food we can find at every grocery and convenience store at any time of the day. The Kingsolvers vowed to learn where their food comes from and try to grow it on their own land. Worst case scenario, they would settle for food that had been raised within a local radius. So, we embark on a journey that involves the Kingsolvers planning a very extensive garden (more like a small-scale farm, actually) and also growing some turkeys for a meat source. Kingsolver is very funny with her telling of this true story, and her husband and older daughter add their tidbits as well. I really loved that this book focuses on eating locally, growing organic fruits and vegetables and also the humane raising and slaughter of fowl. Although I don't garden, I still found this book to be a great read! I enjoying seeing the bond this family shares - it really comes out in their writings! (Non-fiction) 07/01/09
