The Secret Between Us

By: Barbara Delinsky
I have recently begun reading Barbara Delinsky's books; and The Secret Between Us was my very first introduction to this author's incredibly well-crafted stories. This book focuses on a small family - a single mother, Deborah Monroe, her daughter Grace and her son, Dylan. While Grace is driving home on a very dark and rainy night, she accidentally strikes a man. Immediately, we are drawn into this intense story of a mother who will do anything to protect her daughter. Deborah (who was in the car during the accident) decides to take the blame for the accident; she doesn't want her daughter to be punished for what has happened. So, of course, like many secrets, we discover that this secret takes an immediate toll on the Monroe family. Deborah, who is in practice as a doctor with her father, feels immense pressure to try to keep the driver of her car a secret and to move forward with her and her family's lives. Meanwhile, the man dies, and we learn that he is actually a teacher at Grace's school. More characters are introduced including Deborah's sister and father and Grace and Dylan's dad. We also get to meet the victim's brother, and learn about their present and past relationship. The life of the accident victim was a bizarre one. I won't give away the ending of this book, but let it suffice to say that I found this to be a very fascinating read. Anyhow who has or loves children, or who has had an accident, or lapse of judgment will certainly be able to relate to many parts of this story! (Fiction) 07/01/09
