A Darkness Forged In Fire

By: Chris Evans
Evans neatly sidesteps numerous fantasy stereotypes with a tree-hating elf, a dwarf with no affinity for stone, and an abundance of revolvers. Language is passable; characters as a whole are well rendered, particularly our protagonist. Impressive for a debut novel, a good start to a series - but very clearly the first book of a series. Plot as a whole barely progresses, and the last chapter ends with a cliffhanger clearly inviting its sequel. The villains are much less interesting, and complex, than the protagonists, little more than cardboard cut-outs of evil. Feelings between Konowa and Visyna develop quickly, almost prematurely, appearing forced. Yet overall an interesting read that is more military with a dash of fantasy than the traditional fantasy tale. (Fiction) 07/19/09
