There Is No Me Without You

By: Melissa Fay Greene

There is a growing interest in adopting orphaned and/or abandoned babies and children from Africa. Celebrities such as Madonna and Brangelina have adopted babies from Africa which has had a big part in this trend, along with the fact that there have been fairly recent difficulties in the adoption processes in China and Russia, so would-be-adoptive-parents are looking elsewhere. Author Greene, who has herself adopted, has done a remarkable job of interviewing Haregewoin Teferra, who both lost a daughter to AIDS, and also opened an orphanage for children. Melissa Fay Greene gives a thorough history of Ethiopia, of the discovery of AIDS, of Haregewoin Teferra's early life and that of her biological children, and shares many stories of children at the orphanage - some of whom are fortunate enough to be adopted. Although this book is often-times painful and evoked many tears, I really recommend it to anyone who is interested in children, in adoption or Africa. There is a lot of information in this book which I think is worth learning about! (Non-fiction) 07/06/09
